22 Bell St, gorgeous thatched cottage in Shaftesbury with secret garden!

Set right in the heart of Dorset’s most beautiful town Shaftesbury is 22 Bell St – a glorious thatched cottage which accommodates 4/5 guests.

The cottage has a large living room with inglenook fireplace, kitchen, dining room, lovely garden and patio eating area, summerhouse, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and ground floor WC.

The entrance of 22 Bell St takes you to a small hallway from which you can go upstairs or into the living room which has a beautiful fireplace with woodburner and seating for 5.

There is a family kitchen, dining room and WC on the ground floor. French doors in the dining room open out into a pretty garden with lawned area, terrace and a romantic summer house which is perfect for reading, studying or to spend a few quiet minutes having a nap in the armchair.

The property has a characterful winding staircase (this is not suitable for the elderly or those less mobile) which takes you up to a double bedroom and bathroom with bath and shower.

On the second floor is a bright and spacious bedroom under the eaves which has a kingsize bed. There is an extra mattress if guests need to sleep another person or if children prefer to sleep in separate beds (additional charge £25 additional charge).

Well behaved dogs are allowed but they are not allowed to be left on the premises alone and they are not allowed on the furniture.  There is a £25 charge per dog per week.

There is no private parking at the cottage but parking in the street is unrestricted and there is a car park about 2 minutes’ walk down Bell St and free parking approximately 5 minutes’ away.

There are numerous shops and cafes to be explored in this vibrant town. Shaftesbury’s Gold Hill was the location for the iconic Hovis advertisement and it is a treat to walk up or sit at the café at the top of the hill enjoying the quaint houses that line the street and the fabulous countryside beyond.

Nearby attractions are Stonehenge, the glorious house and gardens of Stourhead, The Newt gardens and restaurant and Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset. Bath is about a one hour drive, as is the beach. Cheddar Gorge and Go Ape at Moors Valley country park and forest are also within easy striking distance.

There are glorious walks almost from the door but you do have all the benefits of staying in a vibrant town where you don’t need to even get into the car during your stay: there are wonderful shops, the theatre, cosy pubs and restaurants, supermarkets nearby and just a 10 minute drive to the local train station in Gillingham.

Reviews

We had a wonderful stay. The home and location were wonderful. Laura quickly and competently answered any questions we had both before and during our stay. The town is adorable and had a great market over the weekend. Lovely park. Friendly shops and restaurants/pubs. The stairs are as advertised, but our (big) 3.5 and 5.5 year olds managed them without issues.

Lovely character, atmospheric thatched property in the heart of Shaftesbury Everything you need to be a home away from home Beautiful garden and summer house Easy check in and Laura is a kind and responsive host Hope to stay again

Total Perfection, absolute dream of a cottage and all its original features, amazing location just in the town so its a quick walk to coffee shops, food shops and great pubs and pizzeria, but yet despite being so close, it also feels a million miles away in this old historic town. Laura was an excellent communicator and great instructions left in the folder. As many have said if you have mobility issues the stairs would be a problem as narrow and steep, but they are very quirky and we loved it: it’s a great place to stay and very romantic with the wood burner and the huge fireplace. All in all its a 10 out of 10 from us Sara& Peter:)

Such a gorgeous cottage with lots of old works charm. A great location close to everything with also a lovely garden to enjoy. Our girls enjoyed staying somewhere they would never experience in Australia. A perfect country escape in a lovely English town.
Tanya - June 2022
Laura's cottage in the centre of Shaftesbury was everything we could ask for during our month stay! It really was a home from home, with fantastic walks right on the doorstep.
Leigh - March 2022
Lovely house in the centre of Shaftesbury! We ( family of 4 ) had a great stay. Well equipped and self explanatory Airbnb. Saffron – January 2022 A lovely cottage in a great location. Excellent communication from Laura.
Anastasia - December 2021
A charming ancient thatched cottage in the centre of town. Clean, comfortable and felt like a home. Our host was helpful and generous.
Jeremy - April 2021
This is a fantastic location, moments away (on foot) from most of Shaftesbury’s local amenities. The high street is just around the corner, as is a brilliant bakery and several restaurants, cafés and shops. The surrounding countryside is stunning and there are great local walks. The property is comfortable and well equipped with quality appliances. Lovely garden with lots of shaded seating. It’s a cottage, so there are low ceilings and beams which give it real character. The steepness and unevenness of the stairs can’t be underestimated and that’s clearly explained in the listing. Comfortable beds and crisp white bedding. The double bed on the first floor is custom built into an alcove so you have to crawl in from the bottom (impossible to roll out of bed at night) but that makes it cosy. Lots of helpful information in the guest book with good recommendations for local restaurants. Good wi-fi. Laura was friendly, fast and helpful with her messages and arrival details. Getting the keys from the key safe on the front door made for an easy and stress-free arrival. A really enjoyable stay and highly recommended.
